Unveiling the Levels of Development (LOD) in Building Information Modeling (BIM):

It is a collection of industry standards that enables the AEC sector to correctly record, communicate, and describe Building Information Modeling (BIM) elements. It specifies the content (geometric information, structured data, and connected documents) and reliability of BIM elements at various phases of building project development.

  • LOD 100 – This is the LOD pre-design stage. The LOD 100 element is a conceptual model that defines properties like height, area, volume, orientation, and position. This information is considered an estimate at this point.


  • LOD 200 – This is the LOD schematic design stage. Geometric characteristics like shapes, dimensions, and locations are shown by the LOD 200 element. LOD 200 has a slightly higher amount of complexity than LOD 100. It may also contain certain non-geometric data. At this point, the information is also deemed approximate.

  • LOD 300 is the building design development stage. The graphical representations of LOD 300 may be the same as in LOD 200, but what distinguishes it from LOD 200 is that the geometry and features are recognized accurately at this point. This information can be utilized in the construction phase.

  • LOD 350 – This is the stage of building documentation. LOD 350 obtains the same information as LOD 300, but at this level, interfaces with other building components such as connections and support are also added. It specifies how the component may be placed and how it interacts with other buildings' systems.

  • LOD 400 – It is the construction stage of LOD. Fabrication, assembly, and installation of the components are all included in this section. This information is extremely useful to the suppliers who will be producing the components described. Non-visual information may also be included.



  • LOD 500 – This is the LOD as-built stage. These are the fields that have been confirmed in terms of shape, size, amount, orientation, and position and are deemed to be accurate representations of post-construction building features. The facility managers can utilize these aspects as references for operation and maintenance.
